1. Linked In

LinkedIn is obviously a massive tool, but remember it is a massive tool for EVERYONE so.

Ensure your profile is up to date, not too lengthy, has all your best accomplishments etc

Make sure you are active, connecting, commenting, sharing, liking posts within your network. Ensure you are seen, the more visible you are, the more value you add the more that will come back to you.

If you are considering applying for a job on LinkedIn remember you will probably be 1 of 100 (+) so you will need to do more. If its direct with a company, reach out to line manager, use your network to find the hiring manager, introduce yourself with a short summary of who you are and what you can bring. If it is through a search firm, reach out to the consultant, do the same, don’t go direct, if doesn’t help your position.

2. Network – Utilising your network is essential.

There is a high possibility that you will be able to locate your next challenge via your network so it’s essential you utilise who you know. Ensure you are active networking.

Please also be aware that when you do enter an interview process it is highly likely that your network will be asked about you. Although it’s a massive market, the tools available today makes it very easy for people to connect networks a reach out to someone who you have worked with and ask their opinion of you…

3. Resume – Your resume is your shop window.

Whilst your reputation is essential, for opportunities that are outside your network you need to make sure your resume is the vehicle that sells you the best it can.

Be cautious about paying for resume support. If you do choose to seek a resume writing service, use the resume as a template and do some homework on the provider prior to committing. Ask a search consultant if they would mind reviewing structure etc, if they are good, they will offer free advice, review etc.

Be prepared to tailor your resume to the opportunity you are going after. You must ensure that your resume has the ALL the relevant SKILLS/RESPONSIBILITIES and Achievements for the role that you are going after.

We can provide a separate article relating to your resume, it’s an essential tool and something that you need to get right.

With the growth of AI as well as Internal recruiters, making your resume include the right information is very important.

4. Preparation – Preparation is key

It’s obvious but you will be surprised about how many people do not prepare, for example.

Do your research on the organisation that you are meeting

Through your network, try and understand the company’s pains, or through the consultant you are working with they should be able to help you prep by telling you core issues the role will face (That are not on any JD)

Research the person you are meeting; you may have a common network that can help you build rapport.

5. Flexibility – The market is once again shifting

Going through COVID it demonstrated that many positions were able to be done with remotely or via a hybrid set up. NOW more and more organisations are looking to bring employees back on site. If you can, our opportunities will significantly widen if your location can be flexible. Yes, this is a massive ask, but throughout my 20+ years in this industry I can honestly say that 90% of all senior leaders have relocated in their careers to get to the seniority they are in.

These are just 5 simple tips at things you should consider in this market. If you would like to discuss any of these in greater depth, then please drop me a direct message and lets set up a conversation.
